Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls. (From Marvel)

I have to admit I wasn’t quite on board with Captain Marvel after watching its countless trailers and TV spots.  My speculation continued after I read numerous reviews that weren’t necessarily impressed with Marvel’s latest effort.  However, I have to say that I highly enjoyed this one.  I, like many others was a bit worried about Larson’s portrayal of the character, but save for a few scenes I thought she was great.

I feel like Captain Marvel doesn’t follow the typical outline we in superhero origin stories.  It’s a bit scattered which to me was a good thing.  The script isn’t airtight, but it absolutely works and while it takes awhile to get behind the character she definitely wins you over along the way.  The subversion of expectations is what sticks out to me here.  Most of what I enjoyed about this movie, was that in which I didn’t expect.  There are no stunning twists and turns, but the film was constantly surprising to me.

Captain Marvel really doesn’t have its own signature style and a lot of the film feels a bit dull looking.  That said, the film does feel different than other past MCU entries.  Captain Marvel isn’t the best marvel film, but it is right around the base level of quality you can expect from the studio at this point.  I had a good time with Captain Marvel, and I certainly don’t think it’s as bad as some have said.

  1. Good review. I thought that the movie was good. It wasn’t as a good as some of the other recent big hits (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Infinity War), but it was still a solid MCU film.
