Molly’s Game

The true story of Molly Bloom, a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknown to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led people to believe.

Molly’s Game is the directorial debut from one of the best screenwriters working today in Aaron Sorkin.  Sorkin not only writes a great screenplay per usual here, but also shows that he is more than capable as a director as well.  This movie is a really great and moves at the brisk pace that is much like other films that Sorkin has written in the past.

Molly’s Game is full of charismatic performers, but nobody outshines Jessica Chastain.  This is one of her best performances to date.  Idris Elba is also very good as her lawyer.  Kevin Costner plays Molly’s dad wonderfully and one of his scenes with Chastain is arguably one of the best movie moments of 2017.  There is a lot of great character work in Molly’s Game as you are truly able to see what influence Molly to make the decisions she makes.

This is really story that is so out there and crazy, that is beyond perfect for Sorkin and was a great choice for his first directorial feature.  A lot of this movie is told through narration which can be a bad thing in a lot of different cases, but Sorkin is able to pull it off quite well here.  When used correctly, narration can be exciting to watch and not feel condescending to the audience.  In Molly’s Game, Sorkin masterfully uses narration to tell Molly’s story.  This is also a film where time shifts from past to present quite a bit, sometimes this can feel jarring, but in Molly’s Game these cuts flow almost seamlessly.

Aaron Sorkin has been one of the best writers in Hollywood for quite some time, and with Molly’s Game he shows that he is also quite a skilled director as well.  Jessica Chastain is fantastic as Molly, and the Costner, and Elba all do great work. ( Cera not so much) Molly’s Game is an incredibly entertaining movie, and without a doubt worth your time.

  1. Loved the trademark Sorkin dialogue, but felt he should have trimmed a lot of it, and I felt that he should have focused on a theme specifically to get more of an oomph out of the movie that I felt was missing. Great to hear Elba, Chastain, and Costner speak Sorkin’s words, though!
