Last year I finished 3rd in the critic pool for the Globes and Oscars and while I love the Oscars (and sometimes find it easy to predict), I find the Golden Globes are a fun social event with a some usually unpredictable winners. This is due of course to the fact that The Hollywood Foreign Press isn’t exactly made up of your everyday film buffs. Anyway, I like to think I’m pretty good at predicting these so here we go:
*I am going to discuss the ones I want because I could care less with a few.
Best TV Drama Series:
Will Win: Stranger Things
Should Win: Stranger Things
I honestly see this one as somewhat of a tossup. I personally really like Stranger Things a lot of people like Westworld and it’s probably a little more critically acclaimed. Sometimes the HFPA goes with the most popular choice though: hence Stranger Things.
Best Comedy/Musical Series
Will Win: Atlanta
Should Win: Atlanta
I’ve only seen an episode of Atlanta, but it’s really great. Donald Glover is also going to win best actor. Good for Gambino, I love that guy.
Best actress in a drama TV series
Will Win: Wionna Rider Stranger Things
Should win: Wionna Rider Stranger Things- I thought Rider was great and Stranger Things and would love to see rewarded but a lot of people like Claire Foy
20th Century Women | Deadpool | Florence Foster Jenkins | La La Land | Sing Street
If you don’t think that La La Land is going to sweep it categories, you’re being naive.
Best Actress, Drama
Isabelle Huppert, Elle | Natalie Portman, Jackie | Ruth Negga, Loving | Amy Adams, Arrival | Jessica Chastain, Miss Sloane
This one is completely wide open and I personally loved Jackie and Natalie Portman’s performance.
Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea | Joel Edgerton, Loving | Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge | Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic | Denzel Washington, Fences
Casey Affleck was fantastic in Manchester By the Sea and his only competition is Denzel in Fences.
Annette Bening, 20th Century Women | Lily Collins, Rules Don’t Apply | Hailee Steinfeld, The Edge of Seventeen | Emma Stone, La La Land | Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins
Colin Farrell, The Lobster | Ryan Gosling, La La Land | Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins | Jonah Hill, War Dogs | Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool
Ryan Gosling is the obvious choice here, however Ryan Reynolds and Collin Farrell are good upset contenders. And why exactly is Jonah Hill nominated for War Dogs??
Damien Chazelle, La La Land | Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals | Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge | Barry Jenkins, Moonlight | Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
This is a complete coin toss between Chazelle and Jenkins. Both are amazing and deserving. I’d love to see Jenkins win.
Best Supporting Actress
Viola Davis, Fences | Naomie Harris, Moonlight | Nicole Kidman, Lion | Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures | Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
I really like Naomie Harris in Moonlight too.
Mahershala Ali, Moonlight | Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water | Simon Helberg, Florence Foster Jenkins | Dev Patel, Lion | Aaron Taylor Johnson, Nocturnal Animals
Mahershala Ali in Moonlight was my favorite performance of the year. He is the reason the first act of Moonlight’s 3 part story sticks with me the most.
Kubo and the Two Strings | Moana | My Life as a Zucchini | Sing | Zootopia
