Worshiped as a god since the dawn of civilization, the immortal Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) becomes the first and most powerful mutant. Awakening after thousands of years, he recruits the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and other mutants to create a new world order. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) lead a team of young X-Men to stop their seemingly invincible nemesis from destroying mankind.
Bryan Singer returns to direct his fourth X-Men film, this time boasting the world’s first mutant “Apocalypse” or En Sabah Nur but I’m going to say Apocalypse because it sounds cooler. The film opens in Egypt with a pretty cool origin story for Apocalypse. At this point he seems quite intimidating. Now when he comes to life in present day which is the 80’s, I found some of his dialogue quite laughable. I believe he uses the words “my child” at least 5-10 times sort of like a caring mother. Now that is not to say it doesn’t get better as the film progresses but some corny dialogue none the less. He is played by Oscar Isaac, who I really love as an actor, but in all honestly anyone could of played Apocalypse. It was just the name that earned him the part. I perhaps would’ve Hugo Weaving maybe? This is a stupid complaint but one of his powers is too turn matter into dust, so whenever he is attacked by one of the X-Men wouldn’t it make more sense just to turn them to dust…..nope.
So as the story goes Apocalypse gathers his mutants to carry out his evil plan to destroy the world because it does not respect him. He picks up Angel who is introduced in a fight scene with my personal favorite mutant-Nightcrawler. Also Storm and Psylocke have partnered with Apocalypse. If you follow Olivia Munn at all, you know she has been hyping up her X-men role for quite some time now. So I was surprised to find out that she did absolutely nothing in this movie . It was like Captain Phasma in TFA. Nothing just nothing, maybe 5 lines of dialogue and the rest was her just grunting like an animal. An angel was a complete loser, honestly. I did enjoy Storm though!
Let talk a little bit about Magneto, while I’m at it. Not spoiling anything, he has a very gut wrenching scene in this film. And wow did Fassenbender nail it! Such an excellent actor, and quite pleased with where they took his character in this film.
Now for the X-Men, all were great. I’m going to discuss Jean Grey played by Sophie Turner first. She is a huge part of this movie, and rightly so I enjoyed her character. I did feel as though her acting was spotty in parts however. Cyclops and Nightcrawler were introduced and I loved both of them, awesome to see my favorite 2 X-Men on screen for the first time. Jennifer Lawrence is getting boring, what else is new. McAvoy and Hoult are great. The wolverine cameo was just what it sounds like. It did nothing to advance the plot, but it was cool to see.
That said I did enjoy this movie, but there is a lot going on with it. I don’t think I enjoy it as much as First Class or DOFP but enjoyable still. The thing with me and X-Men movies is it takes me a few watches to see how much I really like them.
Better after a second watch
